This piece was done by
myself and 2 Taiwanese artists - Wubai (500), and Joanne
Chu. Incense is burning on the left, a lotus and pearl
pillow below, baubuai (Taiwanese name for a devining
device used in temples), some liquor (jiu), a chicken leg
offering, and a wan, symbols of Buddhist faith in Taiwan.

![]() Dream of the Nubian Shepherdess This was inspired by a Rousseau painting, of a lion sniffing at a sleeping shepherd. In the Rousseau painting, there also wasn't a feeling of danger. In fact, this is a Nubian shepherdess, and this is a lion king -Mr. Lion - and they are in some watery world perhaps..I wrote a short story about it somewhere. |
![]() Nubian shepherdess, detail Upside down, we become a part of this dream. Our perspective is watching from space. |
![]() Matsu Dao Le (Matsu is here/has come/is coming/has arrived). This will be the cover illustration of my forthcoming book, "Paris of the East/Paris de l'est" |

![]() Mao de pigou This began with a simple verticle line on a long piece of paper... |

This one was done with
another American, Beth Cummings, and a Kiwi, Ben. I interpret this as symbolic about cross-strait relations between China and Taiwan. China is the Ra/Bart Simpson-like character, carving out of the land a giant yam, or sweet potato - Taiwan. Try to find the secret Chinese words in this piece...

![]() "The fumes made Grova a little woozy...Grova retched all over Phillip's new bedspread." |
![]() "That, and the serial set of ASS-KICKINs gleefully administered by Lily." |
![]() "Humph! Do I really have to squat in the same catbox as this uncouth, uncivilized common Chinese alleycat?!" |

![]() Inspired by an electricity outage due to forgetfulness. This event led to a rather memorable blackout party. |
![]() Miss behavin' This was drawn by myself, Joanne Chu, and JC. A woman is sitting at the bar with a martini, holding a cigarette, which is being snuffed at by an elephant sailorman. There's a drunken imp at her Hong Kong feet. Under her legs is her heart, with the key in it. |

![]() Banciao by night My first painting in Taiwan. This shows some of the magical quality of daily life. Happy House is in the lower lefthand side, and a restaurant with lanterns along the left, a 'smileymart' in the center. It reminds me of how Vincent might have viewed life here if he'd come for a visit. |
![]() Twins This image was inspired by the business card of my shufa instructor, Peter, in ShiDa. It's popular among my lezzie friends and manly friends alike. These women are complementary, complete, two halves of a whole. Fat blonds, voluptuous. |
![]() Tribulation, or Resistance After reading "Tiananmen Diary," it struck me how incredulous the Chinese students and citizens were to see tanks bearing down on them - after all, it was the PEOPLE's army - and how distant the leaders had become from their own people. Taken from a photo, images like this should be elevated to an art status. The arrows in the street point in the direction of the tanks bearing down, the streetlamps standing aside like passive bystanders. |
East Meets Mae West One of my personal faves. Mae West is virtually unknown in Asia. They think this is Marilyn Monroe. But it's from a photograph taken nearly a century ago. The background is made with Buddhist papers with the 'wan' on it. The 'wan' is an ancient symbol commonly mistaken for a swastika in the West. |
![]() A beautiful landscape |
![]() This landscape was painted from an actual stamp from Afghanistan in the early 1970s, I think it was. A glimpse of the days when Afghanistan had a postal service. |
![]() The End I forgot the original title of this painting, but it was influenced by Edvard Munch and also the expressionism of the Impressionists, applied to an almost cataclysmicl impression of the environment. This is a somewhat apocalyptic scene about the psychic trauma experienced by the earth. The earth is shown in a more pure energy form. |
![]() Detail There's an antelope - see it? |
![]() You're TV Painted with Christopher. Your head is the house. |
